Strength, Awareness, and Community
This past Sunday, we hosted our 2026 Women’s Self-Defense Workshop at OKICK Boxing Studio in Richmond, BC.
It was a meaningful afternoon filled with focus, support, and strength.
Every year, around International Women’s Day, we host this workshop as part of our commitment to creating a space where women can feel stronger, more confident, and more aware of their personal safety.
This event has never been about selling a class. It’s about offering knowledge, awareness, and a sense of preparedness that every woman deserves to have.
A Room Full of Strong Women
This year’s workshop brought together women from different backgrounds and experiences, all sharing one goal — to learn and grow together.
Throughout the session, participants practiced practical self-defense techniques, learned situational awareness strategies, and discussed how mindset and preparation play an important role in personal safety.
More importantly, the atmosphere in the room was incredibly supportive.Women encouraged one another, pushed through unfamiliar movements, and left with a stronger sense of confidence.
Learning Skills That Matter
The workshop was led by Michelle, whose experience includes:
10+ years of martial arts training (Karate, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Muay Thai, Dutch Kickboxing)
5+ years working in Corrections with male offenders
Her background brings a unique perspective to self-defense training — combining technical knowledge with real-world awareness.
Participants practiced techniques focused on:
Escaping common grabs
Close-range defense strategies
Situational awareness and decision making
Building confidence under pressure
The goal of the workshop was not perfection, but awareness and preparedness.
Why We Continue to Do This
At OKICK, we believe self-defense is not about aggression — it’s about awareness, boundaries, and confidence.
Workshops like this remind us that strength can be developed, and confidence can be trained.
When women come together to support each other, learn together, and step outside their comfort zones, something powerful happens.
If even one participant leaves feeling more confident and prepared than when she arrived, then the workshop has already achieved its purpose.
Looking Ahead
This workshop has now become a small but meaningful tradition for our community.
We plan to continue hosting our Women’s Self-Defense Workshop every year around International Women’s Day, and we look forward to welcoming even more women to join us in the future.
Thank you to everyone who participated this year and helped make this event special.
See you again next year.
